Castles and Forests

Explore the beautiful West Sussex South Downs on a guided walking holiday or short break. The Arun Valley and the picturesque town of Arundel are your base. From here you can visit Arundel's medieval castle and cathedral, wander through the narrow lanes and alleyways of this historic town and visit the Wetland Nature Reserve nearby. A gentle walk beside the River Arun from Arundel leads to Amberley with its castle (now renovated as a hotel and restaurant) and fascinating Industrial Museum.

The South Downs Way national trail passes through Amberley. Follow the path east across windswept Downs to Chanctonbury Ring or west through wooded hills to Bignor Roman Villa. The area around Bignor and the neighbouring villages of Sutton and Graffham has a secluded feel. It is known for its pretty villages and country pubs, steep sided tree covered hills and nature reserves.

We will lead a series of guided walks for your group that are suited to the group's abilities and interests. We will collect you from your hotel in the morning and transfer you to the start of the walk. At the end of the day you will be collected from the trail and transported back to your hotel.

The support vehicle will be available throughout the day. Lunch is typically in a country pub although if the group prefers food and drinks can be transported in the vehicle and lunch can be enjoyed beside the trail.

South Downs Way, West Sussex, England

Graffham - Charlton - Goodwood

We start the day with a drive from your hotel to the pretty village of Graffham, on the northern slopes of the South Downs. From here we climb to the top of the chalk ridge before descending through woodland to Charlton for a much deserved lunch in a lovely country pub.

In the afternoon there is a gentle climb up to the impressive Goodwood Racecourse perched on the hill top overlooking the cathedral city of Chichester. Enjoy stunning views to the coast before we descend to East Lavant where we meet the minibus and return to your hotel.

The itineraries above are within the ability of most regular walkers. However the trails will be adapted to meet the fitness levels and specific requirements of your group.

There is a range of accommodation in the Arundel area for all budgets. To reduce costs some groups prefer to reserve accommodation themselves. Here we list some of the better hotels and inns in the area. However, if you prefer we can reserve rooms for you. We charge the price of the rooms plus a fee of £15 per person per night to cover our admin and insurance costs.

Brooklands Barn, Arundel

Self-catering luxury accommodation for groups of up to 20 people, Broadlands Barn is a centre offering retreats, workshops and activity holidays for families, groups of friends and corporate meetings and events.

Just 15 minutes walk from Arundel town centre this is a perfect base for exploring the West Sussex Downs on an activity weekend or mid-week break.
